DOG VACCINATIONS

There are major changes in recommendations for vaccinating dogs.  Vaccines have been shown to last longer than previously thought.  Therefore some vaccines may be given on an every three-year schedule.   We customize a vaccination schedule appropriate for your pet.

 CORE VACCINES INCLUDE:

bulletDHLP       (combination of distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parainfluenza)
bulletParvovirus
bulletAdditional Leptospirosis serovars
bulletRabies

NON-CORE VACCINES INCLUDE:

bullet

Lyme Disease

bullet

Giardia

bullet

Corona

bullet

Bordetella

After the puppy series the core vaccines may be given to many dogs in a three-year rotation, except for the Leptosporosis, which is given yearly.

PUPPIES

Vaccinate every three to four weeks from 6-7 weeks of age through 16 weeks of age.  Use distemper-hepatitis-parainfluenza-parvo combination vaccines without Leptospirosis to decrease the chance of a vaccination reaction.  Leptospirosis is not given until 12 weeks of age. (unless Leptospirosis is prevalent in your area).   A one-year rabies can be given at 14 weeks of age.

ADULT DOGS

After the initial puppy vaccines, or first adult series, rotate the DHLP, parvovirus and rabies on three-year cycles.  Lepto and any non-core vaccines are given yearly.

NON-CORE VACCINES are to be used depending on the dog’s situation and travel plans. (For example:  Lyme disease is a serious concern in New England, the upper Midwest and any areas with ticks).

We now have protocols which follow these important new findings.  We still notify our clients when their dog is due for vaccinations, as they will continue to be a critical part of the annual exam.

We will start each dog on its individual rotating vaccination program designed specifically with your pet’s situation in mind.
