The American Association of Feline Practitioners, a veterinary specialty group, has made recommendations of cat vaccines. Two of its recommendations are:
|
Injectable vaccines be given in separate sites on the body or an intranasal used. | |
| The Feline Leukemia and FVRCP (Feline distemper) vaccines be separated |
The feline association also concludes the cat vaccines may remain protective for up to three years. Therefore, we recommend the following schedule:
| Vaccinate every 3 to 4 weeks of age through 12 to 14 weeks of age. Use FVRCP, and leukemia vaccines that are not combined into one vaccine. | |
| Use intranasal vaccines when possible. |
After the initial kitten vaccines or first adult series, rotate the FVRCP, and rabies on three-year cycles. Leukemia is optional for indoor only cats. If given, leukemia is given yearly.
We now have protocols that follow these important new findings. We still notify our clients when their cat is due for vaccinations, as they will continue to be a critical part of the annual exam.
